Female Gangs

Call me sheltered, but I really didn't know there were female gangs out and about; or knew, but never gave the issue any serious attention. Gang violence seems to be on the rise especially in cities like Chicago, Miami, LA and NY where girls are branching out and forming their own exclusive girl-gangs! Now, despite the fact that we should be long past the whole 'gang' business, the idea that girls feel the need to do this is amazing.

Young boys typically join gangs for protection (from gangs) they also join to feel a sense of acceptance from the 'family' like setting. I personally don't think girls are faced with the same social concerns or challenges, at least not in the same way. Boys feel the NEED to be tough and gangs supply the means to do so, but I've never seen girls as having that concern. I DO however believe most girls get involved with gangs for the boys and/or girls (as to imply bi-sexual tendencies amongst these groups)

I'm sure the havens provide a place to escape to, especially within urban environments plagued with crime and drugs, but to put yourself right in the middle of more crime and drugs is beyond me. This is NOT what little girls are made of, so can you guys help me out with this...WHAT'S UP WITH GIRL-GANGS???

I think I may have been a tad bit sheltered as well, female gangs? Really.

The purpose of a female gang? How exactly do they make it when most women don't get along?

FEMALE GANG=OXYMORON

I can't say I understand it either, but I do believe that they do it for the same reason that guys form gangs...it's a WARPED sense of acceptance, protection, community, etc. These are not just qualities men seek. It's kind of like a cult to me though...seems like your mind is not your own anymore.

I will never understand why you can't have your homies, that acceptance, that sense of community and protection WITHOUT THE VIOLENCE AND CRIME.

I definitely knew it existed. However, can't really say I've witnessed much of girls n' gangs or what have you.

There is just so much peer pressure on children as a whole these days that I'm certainly not surprised.

Course, I too don't see any logical reason why a female would even want to become part of any girl gang but...that's an adult for you --- [ALWAYS TRYING TO MAKE SOME SENSE OUT OF THE MADNESS].

Hope ya have a wonderful weekend lady :-)

I can sorta understand that concept of female gangs...girls can be sooo cliqueish if that's spelled right..every little girl wants to fit in and being in a gang probably makes them feel like they belonged...sometimes girls can be worse than guys.

I never understood it so I can't get with it.

I feel bad for the girls that feel drawn to the lifestyle that goes along with gang life.

Thanks for raising my aware-mess(not a typo) on the situation.

Good post, son. smile

I think it is all about wanting their place in the world. A place where they feel unconditional acceptance. I don't have intimate knowledge of gang life, but I do know people, who had no identity, no confidence, then they pledged and crossed in a sorority and all of a sudden they are this confident person. So there is defiantly something to the clan nature of women in organized groups. Gangs or otherwise.

I can't and I won't. I have never understood the whole "what set u belong to" thang!

I knew they existed.

I think it's more of being accepted and looking for someone to protect them b/c alot of the girl gangs are affiliated with the guy gangs. Sort of like a big brother-little sister relationship.

I've heard of girl gangs.. one of my cousins used to be in one.. it's like their family.. get jumped in.. get cut out.. it's for the same reasons as boys... protection

Girl, JMW - your compulsion piece inspired me yesterday - come by my spot when u get a chance. although it may not be tidy enough. LOL! ;-)

the girl gang seems to defy logic until you stop and think that not all girls feel safe, protected, or supported. Having a girl baby as opposed to a boy doesn't make parents any more adept or willing to take care of her.

It is sad, but this mentality is part of that whole "where my girls at" thing. Girls get together to beat up a girl who is messing with on of the "cliques" boyfriends, that victim gets a group, and it leads to this stuff.

I don't get the whole gang thing. I understand girls wanting to be in little groups, but after high school that gets to be real old. Also, the violence is just crazy. Part of this has to come from issues with self esteem, and wanting to belong.

All I know is ....it's a sad situation for both boys and girls. Every documentation that I have watched about gangs, the outcome is one of three. They end up dead, in prison or parayized. Why bother even going down that road is the million dollar question.

I knew girl gangs existed-they're becoming more apparent around my way. And they're just as violent and ruthless as the boy gangs!

I do-but I don't understand the whole gang culture-particularly when they start gang warfare and people get killed cos they're in the wrong area, or wrong estate!

Maybe it's cos I've never felt the need to be a part of a gang and such that I can't fully embrace the gang culture....but then again, I don't know if I really want to!

Here's my take on this "girl gang" thing: like someone stated before, I think they exist for the same reason that guy gangs exist. The world has changed drastically in that girls aren't all that lady-like anymore. Day by day I look around at all these dude-like young girls. You have female boxers looking like men (kudos to Leela Ali at maintaining her femininity). I just think that females join gangs for the same reason guys do. They join for respect (others fearing them) and acceptance. But like I said that's just my opinion.
