That Ol' Time Religion

That back-n-the-day mother/grandmother who walked around in slides and a housedress humming in the spirit…that ol’ time religion.

That closet that doubled as a prayer room, that oil placed on your forehead before your days journey- “cover him/her in the blood of Jesus”- that ol’ time religion.

That fasting, praying and calling on the Lord for her family in times of trouble- that ol’ time religion is too far gone. The mama’s and grandmama’s hardly pray anymore; there’s no covering for the children’s head. Sin has taken over because there’s too few fighting the battle; not enough to ward off the attacks of the enemy.

Where are the warriors-the soldiers-the gate keepers-the care taker’s the one’s that slumber not, nor sleep.

In Helen Baylor’s testimony, she talks about all the wrongs she’d done in her life from drugs to promiscuity and how her deliverance wasn’t due to the relationship she had with the Lord, but because she had a “praying grandmother.’

Our homes are in shambles, our children are misguided, our streets are plagued with violence because there is no one tilling the land; the gate keeper has fallen asleep and allowed evil to run rampant. People are walking around like hallow shells, looking for any and everything to fill them; dazed and confused, lost and abused-the harvest is ripe, but the laborer’s are few! We need that ol’ time religion back…we need those prayer warriors who KNOW that “Greater is He that is in me, then he that is in the world.” (1 John 4:4). We need those soldiers who’ll never get tired!

Hi!

Was nice of u to have commented on my blog, robertfoo.blogspot.com. Otherwise, won't have a chance to read all your interesting articles about your belief and experiences.
I think, everyone on earth needs certain energy or influence to keep going with life. Some might not be lucky, when they have the wrong influences to guild them. Perhaps you and me are luckier when we encounter the right teaching to teach us right. To me, all these are termed as knowledge. Too much of knowledge could lead to arrogance and self esteem of a person. If we add wisdom, then our knowledge can be more refine and purer. To you, you add religion to refine your thought. If only everyone on earth, has the same believe with one faith or religion, then our world could be more peaceful and safer to live in.

My great-grandma was a soldier if I ever knew one. She (born in 1910) helped raise me until I was 7.. she got alzheimers then and lived with it for 12 years, she passed away last August. I was always with her, even when she first got it, and she was the one who got me into church. Now, I go to church by myself.

Now you know, people with Alzheimer's will tell their history, but she really never had anything bad to tell besides she used to have a peeping tom LOL. But neway... There were 21 ministers from the metro Detroit area at her funeral... they really don't make them like her anymore. One of the ministers said something that stuck with me, "If you want to know the way to heaven, follow Grandma." So, I'm trying to follow her.. trying to stay "precious" as you would say LOL. Isn't it ironic that the ones that were closest to her (i.e. me, my mama, and some other cousins, out of her literally 59 grandchildren, and literally 150+ great-grandchildren) are the ones doing the best right now.

Had I not been her shadow, I don't know where I would be today.

From giving you a verse to read from her holy bible for any/every situation imaginable -- to making sure we were in the house of the lord EVEN WHEN SERVICE WERE NOT IN SESSION -- to reminding us always to leave everything in the hands of the lord -- to making sure we were active participants in church (i.e., she always encouraged us to be a part of the choir,to be aisle ushers to pay extra close attention in Sunday school), my grandmother was the one you could count on for that good old fashion "ol' time religion".

Since she left us, I don't know what happened to me...

SIGH

OOOHHHH... you guys are about to make me misty...especially ms.b - nothing happened to you lady, you just keep pushing that rock forward and the Lord will see you through.

mscoko: hey (precious) HAHAH. Yes, girl that's what I'm talking about...the Bible talks about how the generations of the righteous will be blessed, so you just keep doing what you're doing lady.

xp: YES... I'm glad I still have mine too...what a gift to treasure. (thanks for the visit)

r.f: you're welcome and thanks for the return visit...you're so right about that one faith thing...it's all about being on one accord, that would bring so much harmony.

Amen. I was blessed to have a praying grandma who passed on to my mama and has passed it on to me. Throughout my trials and tribulations, prayer has kept me grounded and kept me from getting too lost in the wilderness.

that is why every chance we get we have to minister to our young folks and not only talk to them but illustrate to them what old-time spirituality is, I say spritual because God is not a religion.--Amen
