What Would You Do For A Klondike Bar...

Corporate American is made up of many forms, but for the purpose of this post, there'll only be TWO the High (Executive) Low (Assistant). Now, that's not to say that there's anything wrong with being an assistant (like me), but we're usually left to do the grunt work.

I was watching "The Devil Wears Prada" (at the request of a friend) and was asked how long I think I'd last in a job were I'm being yelled at, called by the wrong name, made to run around like a chicken with my head cut off, disrespected, and dogged. I then started to think about some of the people I've worked with, who allowed themselves to be subjected to that very treatment for a title and a check; they sell their pride and dignity for pennies, or six figures.

As an adult and a parent, I just can't see myself going home telling my sons right from wrong; teaching them value, then going off to a job where the boss comes in and throws his/her coat on my desk and says..."Why are you still sitting there...go hang up my Da#@ coat" and having my response be..."Oh, yes sir/mame, I'm very sorry." as I scurry over to the closet...I'd have KNOCKED their friggen head off and been fired, "but I've got bills to pay; and this is a dream job!"

Under the WORST possible working conditions...how long would you last? Does everybody have a price? And if so...what would be your's; What would You guys do for a klondike bar.

Under the BEST conditions, I'd say about 10 minutes. I know that's a hasty answer, but i just believe in respect and I believe in God. He has said, "I've never seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread." I know that there is SOMETHING I coud do SOMEWHERE that would allow me to make a living with dignity. If it means flipping burgers and cutting grass, so be it, but in that situation, I would still need to be a man in front of my children. As it is we are an oppressed people that continue to suffer degredation and humiliation. I would not like to think that I would voluntarily take on that yoke. I would rather take on His. Matt 11:28-30

THANK YOU G...lol, that's what I'm talking about...He'll supply our every need and you'll not want for anything, so why allow yourself to be treated like crap...like my mother used to say, "respect it due to a dog!"

Well, i have left many jobs because of disrepectful, wannabee plantation owners...and so my peace, and respect means far more to me than a title. Great post!

when my body tells me to leave, I'll go. When I start twitching and thinking that Rikers Island might not be so bad, I'll just type up my resignation. Nothing is worth my sanity.

I have been told that I can pretty much tolerate a lot of things. But this would be a definite deal breaker for me. I love that movie but I would not tolerate that.

I can put a smile on about a lot --(I won't deny you that)-- but talking to or treating me like I am anything less than an adult is a hell to da naw!!

I mean nobody should feel like they HAVE to put up with some B.S.--on da real!!

As far as I'm concerned, you can take your job and shove it up your....

Uh oh...I'm losing focus aren't I??

I have not had a boss do that. I have had bosses do stuff that was just stank.

For example, I worked at a college and it was mad crazy because of registration time. So mgmt said to restrict what we do to give faster service. Well, my sup who was flighty chic (who once slept with a fellow married co-worker and he named his baby with his wife her name, sighing the drama) was monitoring us and see was behind me at my counter. I was about to type something in and she actually hit the back of my hand. The student had this Aww shit look. And my face registered shock and then calmed as to not cause a scene. LOL. Ms. Flighty paused looked at me and apologized ALL day. LOL.

I am more passive. Sometimes too much in some cases. I am quiet until I have to tell it like it is. My last sup, who I still work with, and I got into when I had enough of her and her silliness. Right in front of our Div Mgr. she went off so loud the office outside the door heard her. I let her have it.

From that experience last year, I have learned to talk when needed and be silent. See I have watched folks who do janky stuff get their karma. LOL.

As for the Devil movie, I would have left or went off first and then left. I am not taking no ishlike that.

Wow, no Klondike bar is that damn good. I'm in HR & have never tolerated much bullsh*t. I always let the other person know what time it is.

Have you spoken with ethics or HR yet? My advice would be to document EVERYTHING. Dates, times, the situation and what was said. In the vent that something shady happens, you will have a record of wrong doing.

THANKS'S PAULA, BUT GIRLLLLL...THIS ISN'T HARDLY ABOUT ME...LOL. Oh, no...I couldn't take if for a SECOND. but thank you for that advise now I know if I EVER needed an HR person I'm coming to you...LOL.

this thouggt/question came up after watching that movie...

Hi Just!
Thank you for visiting my blog, the similarities are uncanny...all I could do was smile:)
I had to come and "see" who you are..and was I ever in for something!!!!Your blog is "deep" and I mean that in a good way. You are the type of girl that makes people actually *think*
So ...I put on my "thinking cap" and tried to answer your question.
If I was in a situation where I had a boss sooo over bearing I would 1. try to talk to him/her
2. Every BOSS has a boss, so I would talk to his/her boss. 3. If that doesn't work, I would put in for a transfer. The reason I didn't say I would QUIT my job is because;unless you are working at McDonalds..a good paying job is HARD to "come-by". They want YOU to quit! Don't give them the satisfaction. :)

It depends on the job. This was a dream job. Dream job. Many women put up with it for all the perks and to fulfill my dreams. If living with that hell for a year or two would get me what I wanted I would do it. Whatever doesn't kill me makes me stronger.

You know gurl, thank you for this because it adds to the validity of what I am trying to teach my sons. They are both about to be ready for college and the real world and I am trying to get them to see that they need to continue to do what they have been good at for so long and these talents that they share have honestly been passed down through my family but each generation to show this talent have NEVER pursued it and has ended up with the "I HAVE TO PAY BILL'S" jobs and have to sell themselves short to keep that job. I want them to see that they can find a career doing what they love and what they are excellent at.

I think some people are afraid to make the move to aim for more (myself included) and we feel that these kinds of jobs are safe for us...

Hey!!! I'm late! Anyway, I know I wouldn't be able to put up with it for long. I have a problem with people talking to me like I'm a child. I quit a couple of jobs because some shitty manager didn't know how to communicate using his "Big Boy" words. My recomendations on quitting?......
Wait until you know they'll need you....and
JUST
SLEEP
IN!

Yeah...I know I'm late too, but being as I'm an assistant I just HAD to comment on this!

I loved this movie. The main character (assistant) reminds me sooooo much of myself when I was in my early 20's...just eager to please. I put up with a lot of crap from the people I supported. A lot of things I definitely wouldn't put up with today!!

I would need more than this little box to go into all that I have been through as an assistant working for pschos. I got my first gig being an assistant at 15 so I've been doing this a lonnnnnnnnng long time!

You live and you learn.

I can't lie not much. I have a lot of hustle in me and I know that God promised to provide my necessities, Shelter, Food Clothing... Anything else I need money for I can work that out without being demeaned.

I had an "Assistant" job that turned me into Girl Friday. I was balancing budgets and doing payroll in addition to washing clothes and running errands (I worked for a Pastor). and that was just Friday and Tuesday..LOL.

So I have been pushed to my limit and let me tell you it is not pretty to be on the receiving end of one of my tirades when I am fed up.

malieta: OH YOU'D BETTA STOP...lol. THANK YOU MUCH LADY. It was indeed a pleasure and I'll surely be back. Seriously...those are some good pointers. I've always thought about the 'every boss has a boss' thing, but so often they side with the higher up.

ticia: LOL...YES, THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.

miz jj: NOW... on some REAL stuff, i can TOTALLY see that... I'm doing things that way NOW at this job...for the 'benefits' to my future, but things have not yet gotten out of controll, but I still don't know if I could have dealt like the girl in the movie.

a.w.t.k.: I TOTALLY AGREE WITH ALL THAT. Especially that last line. (your comment is what prompted today's post (6/26) THANKS FOR YOUR INSIGHT. and visit

nic: LOL... GIRL, i know that's right...and that's the way to do it...or go on vacation then STAY THERE. lol

op.d: LOL... girl, I know...I thought about you too...since you're the only one I knew was an assistant...I wanted to see what you thought. (BUT YOU WERE SOOOO LATE WITH IT...UM, UM, UM)

ingrid: LOL... WOW.. now see, I'da had to leave...LOL.
